Carpenter Hill Elementary School
Hays CISD
“Striving and Thriving.” It’s the motto at Carpenter Hill Elementary School, and it’s the approach architects took to ensure that this third generation prototype and planned STEM (Science/Technology/Engineering/Math) magnet school would provide students with innovative educational experiences.
Working with district staff, architects refined the design of the original prototype to create specialized classrooms specifically for the STEM program. The classroom layout offers maximum flexibility for teaching and learning stations and required extra power, data, and network modifications, mobile classroom furnishings, and multi-media areas.
By connecting students to their physical environment, the design also taps into the heritage of the W.H.H. Carpenter family, who first purchased the “Hill” in 1855. The school features large sky lights in common areas as well as windows in each classroom. Two rainwater harvesting tanks were added to the design and are used to irrigate the grounds as well as teach conservation. The stained concrete floors can be maintained without the use of abrasive chemicals, saving money, cleaning time, and resources.
Balancing the rich history of the land with the needs of the STEM program resulted in a responsible design that inspires learning and serves a thriving community.

We recently completed our 4th and 5th school protypes and couldn't be happier with Claycomb and the quality of work and service they provide. Our teachers, students, and parents love these schools. Our partnership with Claycomb is truly exemplary.
